World Horizons - In Detail

Who We Are

We are a prayer based, pioneering, prophetic, pastoral mission movement. We exist on behalf of places and people not yet prayed for, churches not yet planted and missionaries not yet sent.

Our focus differs from that of some others, because we are committed to being a movement, and because we continue to put prayer as our number one activity.

We resist the temptation to allow ourselves to be guided by human wisdom, but instead submit our plans, hopes and dreams to God, and ask Him to take us to the places He wants us to go to.

As a result, our constant aim is to become more radically focused on the most difficult areas of the world, more global, more excellent and more creative in all we do.

We are pioneering and prophetic, we go to places where others don’t, and we always aim to allow ourselves to be guided by God, and to recognise His truth where it has been obscured by human ‘wisdom’.

We are pastoral, because we recognise the real need to take care, spiritually and physically, of those who are putting their lives into fulfilling the challenge of the great commission. We operate a number of structures throughout the movement that ensure accountability and support are there for all of our workers and their families.

We are a mission movement, not an organisation; we are essentially a network of individuals, families, churches, businesses and other creative projects and communities, all over the world, who are focused on working together to achieve a common goal.

Throughout the movement we are involved in a huge range of activities including sports, business, prayer, compassion ministry and training.

Our History

World Horizons began with one man praying in South Wales in the 1970’s. However we have always understood our roots go back to the prayers for world evangelisation prayed during the Welsh revival of 1904. Llanelli, the UK base for World Horizons, was a centre for the revival.

Indeed our roots may go back even further, to the Celtic monks, many of whom travelled from Wales to take the gospel into an unreached world many centuries ago.

Since its beginnings in the crowded living room of a terraced house, World Horizons has gone on to become a multi-national, multi-ethnic movement of more than 500 volunteers, with the majority now coming from Latin America. Although we began in the UK, we are now living and working in more than 30 different nations.

Our Vision

The focus of our activities is upon the most ‘church neglected’ parts of the world, places where there are no churches, or very few Christians. Broadly speaking these are Southern Europe, North West Africa, The Middle East, Northern India, Central Asia and South East Asia.

We have a particular focus on the vast Silk Route region, and the lands of the old Roman Empire surrounding the Mediterranean. These regions are not easy to work in. They need a deeply prayerful and creative approach.

It is our aim to see praying and worshipping communities of believers living throughout these areas, and sharing the message of redemption with those around them.

In particular we seek not only to enable direct pioneering and creative mission; but increasingly to help new movements of mission to emerge from within countries that need to be reached with the Gospel.
